How to unjam jammed dialup lines

A tty line is jammed if there is no one using it, but it still shows busy
when dialed. To unwedge it, find the rack full of phone gear in the
machine room. The cabinet across the aisle from the kl console, and a bit
closer to the tape drives. It says "630 Data Communications System" on the
front. Open the panel and you will see two rows of phone jacks strung
across the innards. The jacks that have switches under them are the ones
actually hooked up. The numbers with the jacks correspond to the tty line
numbers; specifically the ones near the center of the panel are used for
the dialup lines, and the others handle the more permanent connections.
Pick the switch for the wedged line and toggle it. ("toggle" means turn it
to the other position, wait a second, and turn it back to the original)
This breaks any connection and resets the line, so be sure the line is
really not in use.

To be sure no job is associated with the line, type the following command;
(the tty number is plugged in for the N)

PJ ttyN

The system will tell you what is going on with the tty in question.

When you have toggled the line, try dialing it to be sure it rings; if it
doesn't you can guess that it was actually broken instead of just wedged,
and report that to some hardware fixer.
